First edition. Two large folding plans lithographed by J. Dumphy at the Government Press. Small folio. Very good in contemporary wrappers. vi, 31, [1]pp. [Madras] Published for the Indian Public Works Department,

A rare history of Fort St. George. It was published in late 1857, and commences with an extract of a government report dated 5 November that year. In addition to the history, it documents the various additions and improvements to the Fort. The quality - impregnability - of fortifications were an issue as, by that time, the Indian Mutiny was already underway. The recommendation here is to add another 386 cannon. It includes two folding plans, being: "A plan of Fort St. George, 1747", and "Madras part of the Black Town and the adjacent ground to the S. and W. with the French Attack from Decr 12th 1758 to Feby 17, 1759."
