The Nordenskjold expedition was part of a three pronged geographical survey on the Antarctic continent devised at the International Geographical Congress of 1895. The others were Scott and Drygalski.

Nordenskold's sector was to be the South Atlantic, and they achieved a great deal especially considering that they lost their ship Antarctic to the ice, which left the party stranded in three groups over winter. The artist on board was Frank Stokes, an American.
