7. Tombs of Beni-Hassan

8. Denderah. Interior of Great Temple

9. El Vxsor

13a. Ruins of the Great Temple. Karnac. Thebes.

And the following after Jones:

11. Great Temple, Karnac, Thebes

12. Great Temple Karnac

13. Ruined Propylon. Karnac. Thebes.

Owen Jones and Jules Gourey were both architects by trade, and the purpose of their travels through Egypt was to pursue their interest in polychromatic patterns as utitised in the ancient world. Jones' career stayed true to this path and he made a pioneering impact on the landscape of British design and pattern theory. His magnum opus, The Grammar of Ornament (1856), was a highly influential and impressive suite of plates laying down the principles of colour and pattern as evinced in architecture in virtually all known historical and cultural traditions. This journey was clearly an important research expedition.
