Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize for Beloved in 1988, and it was adapted for film with Oprah Winfrey acting the part of Sethe in 1998. The novel is Morrison’s first to have a historical setting and is based on the real story of Margaret Garner, an enslaved woman who killed her infant daughter instead of allowing her to be returned to slavery.
