Bland (1863-1945) and Backhouse (1873-1944) collaborated for the second time in this account of the Court of Peking. The success of this book and their previous book, China Under the Empress Dowager, helped to establish both of their reputations as oriental scholars. It was later discovered by Hugh Trevor-Roper that Backhouse had fictionalized his sources.
