A View of Grosvenor Square London. ...

BOWLES Thomas (1794)

£500.00

Etching on copper, image 232 x 386; widest: 252 x 386 mm, in strong original wash colour. London : Laurie & Whittle, 12th May,

Attractive general view of Grosvenor Square; the central garden is circular and laid out in the Dutch style. The image is populated with local figures: pedestrians, carriages, one with outriders, horsemen, horse and carts, a sedan chair and even a shepherd with his flock.

Sir Richard Grosvenor obtained permission to build on the land in 1710; ever since it was completed, the square has been one of the most fashionable addresses in London, but the face of the square has changed considerably since this print was drawn.

A good example of a scarce view.
