This is not a photobook. Neither is it a photographic catalogue or a retrospective. It is an illustrated year by year account of the artistic and teaching activities that Otsuji Kiyoshi (1923-2001) was involved in. As a founder of various experimental workshops as well as a teacher, Otsuji stands out in the way in which he has stayed ahead of trends in photography, developing many, contributing to each, while at the same time not being tied to any of them. He was truly avant-garde, without appearing to have any of their attitudes. He is truly modernist, without any disdain for documentary photography. He never published any books, he never courted fame, indeed, he seems to have been content with passing on whatever he knew to his students. He is a towering figure, somebody who was constantly ahead of his time.
