Leaf from a Book of Hours. Use of Coutances. Normandy,

FRENCH SCRIBE  (c.1420)

£1250.00

BORDER WITH KNEELING FIGURE

Single leaf (c. 162 x 112mm). Illuminated manuscript on parchment. Two, two-line and several one-line initials on blue and red grounds in gold, the larger enclosing coloured foliage on gold grounds, rubricated in red with line fillers and bar down left-hand-side of text column in matching colours, ending in sprays of acanthus leaves, flowers with spiked stamens, borders of foliage and fruit, verso with figure of kneeling man in blue robes with a red hat, pointing upwards, to the text.

An attractive leaf from an early Book of Hours in Latin, with psalm 92 starting at the first large initial on the recto ('Dominus regnavit decorum indutus est..'), followed by Psalm 99 ('Jubilate deo omnis terra...'), indicating that it is an extract from Lauds, from the Use of Coutances, a diocese in Normandy. On the verso is the figure of a man, kneeling and almost smiling, in blue robes with red hat, pointing upwards to the text.

Some wear to gold and colour, remnants of adhesive to outer margin, slight browning of lower margin of recto, otherwise very good condition.

Provenance: From the collection of Roger Martin (1939-2020)..
