Drop Dead Gorgeous

La Prose

Maggs Bros. are delighted to host an exhibition of fine Bindings on Kitty Maryatt's La Prose du Transsibérien Re-creation.

Twenty-five binders from the U.S.A., Canada and the U.K. were commissioned to bind a copy of this facsimile of the 1913 La Prose du TranssibeĢrien by Sonia Delaunay and Blaise Cendrars, published in 2018 by Two Hands Press. The exhibit commenced in 2019 in San Francisco, traveled to Los Angeles and Boμon in 2020, and was shown virtually at Minnesota Center for the Book in 2021. The exhibit has been curated by Kitty Maryatt, with Simon Eccles and Toby Schwartzburg as Co-Curators.

"La Prose du Transsibérien is the armature on which the drop dead gorgeous bindings in this exhibit are built. Originally folded and bound in a simple vellum case, the 1913 book explodes into the space you occupy when opened, forcing you to change from a private to a public viewing, a dramatic change in the reading experience. Sonia Delaunay virtually dominates the book, commanding your attention immediately when the book opens with her vibrant, sinuous colours leading you inexorably to the Eiffel Tower. The prose poem by Blaise Cendrars performs its own spectacle in blazing colour, taking liberties with poetic form and guiding you on a journey of surprising typographic experiences. For her second act, Sonia Delaunay penetrates the poem with color, reinforcing the shape of the poem. A book with such vitality screams out to the binder: see what you can do with me. This exhibition was inspired by the celebrated binder Paul Bonet, who in 1964, designed an extraordinary binding for a copy of La Prose" - Kitty Maryatt

The exhibition will be open at 48 Bedford Square from October 4th - October 25th 2021, Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 5.00pm.

If possible, please contact Benjamin Maggs ben@maggs.com in advance of your visit in order that we can manage visitor numbers and maintain a certain degree of social distancing.

On Monday, October 11, there will be a screening of the 2019 documentary by Rosy Rhee titled The Making of a Masterpiece: La Prose du Transsibérien. The hour-long documentary will commence at 6:00pm and will be followed by a Q & A session with Kitty Maryatt. To RSVP, please email ben@maggs.com
