AN ARMY WITHOUT DISCIPLINE IS BUT A MOB IN UNIFORM

First edition. Unbound gatherings, a couple of nicks to title-page, some minor spotting, three page numbers corrected in pencil, very good. [x], 1386pp. [San Francisco], Headquarters, Eighth Infantry, U.S. Army,

An extraordinary work comprising over 17,000 entries, which include technical terms, biographies of distinguished officers, descriptions of military and naval battles, up to date geographical information, as well as "historical accounts of all North American Indians".

Born in Pennsylvania, Wilhelm (1839-1922) served with the Union during the Civil War and, when promoted to Brevet Major in 1867, was cited for his "gallant and meritorious services" at the battle of Cold Harbor, during which he was injured and later posted to the Eighth Infantry in San Francisco.

This was the most ambitious of the several works Wilhelm produced for the Eighth Army, all seemingly privately printed in low numbers.
