COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, BIRMINGHAM ISSUE

Stipple engraving measuring 210 by 130mm. A little toned. Birmingham, Whitworth & Yates, Bradford Street, Nov 1st,

A rare Birmingham printed issue of this famous portrait of George Washington in his role as Commander-in-Chief. Printed just a year after the close of the Revolutionary War, this image was based on an original by the American artist John Trumbull (1756-1843), who served during the Revolutionary War. His talent as an artist was such that Washington appointed him aide-de-camp. He left the army in 1777 to study in London under Benjamin West.

Birmingham-based Whitworth and Yates operated in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. They produced coins and medals, as well as prints. Originally Yates and Whitworth, they became Whitworth and Yates in 1777.
