Available to view at our Curzon Street shop.
Watercolour in black and white on artist's board, measuring 150 by 115mm. Stamped on verso "28 Sep '95"
Original artwork for an article in The Graphic newspaper, September 28 1895, pp.308. Article titled 'The Training Squadron at Spitzbergen; from a correspondent onboard H.M.S. "Calypso"'.
The match itself was conducted between members of the crews of Calypso and Active versus Ruby and Voltage whilst they had disembarked from their Newfoundland training service at Recherché Bay. The pitch was described in the accompanying article as being "soft mossy earth with lots of stones and mossy hillocks; and the out field was possibly worse, as it included several watercourses." The match occurred between 9.30pm and midnight, under the glare of the unsetting Arctic summer sun.
