An excellent set of images documenting Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909.

This was Shackleton's second expedition to the Antarctic. Here his team were the first to climb Mount Erebus, the first to reach the Southern Magnetic Pole. In what proved a characteristic decision on Shackleton's part, while they came within 90 miles of the actual South Pole, he turned his men back rather than endanger them.

The images are as follows: 1. E.H. Shackleton, C.V.O.; 2. Dr Forbes McKay; 3. Joyce, Dogs & Penguins; 4. Winter Quarters, Mt Erebus in distance; 5. Southern Depot Party with Dogs; 6. Union Jack Hoisted at South Magnetic Pole; 7. The Return of the Southern Party.
