being a summary and exact account of the most material transactions, and occurences relating to this country, in the order of time in wherein they happened, from the discovery by Capt. Gosnold in 1602, to the arrival of Governor Belcher, in 1730. With an introduction containing... the gradual discoveries of America and the progress of the reformation to the Discovery of New England.
First edition. Vol. 1 (a part of the intended second volume was published 20 years later). 12mo. Unrestored contemporary calf, the boards with double gilt fillet enclosing a simple blind-stamped roll, the spine in six compartments with raised bands within double fillets, gilt numeral I, lower third of ffep torn away, headcap perished. "Our most scholarly colonial work" (Howes). Seven years in preparation, it was Prince's original intention to bring the history down to 1730. Only a portion (ninety-six pages) of the second volume was published and that not till 1755. The entire work was published in full in 1826.
