Hesketh-Prichard was an explorer and marksman who made his name writing thrilling tales of adventure on the world's various frontiers.

This work is the product of an expedition to Patagonia funded by The Daily Express, with the objective of seeking an extinct giant ground sloth known as the mylodon, thought perhaps to be extant in the Andes. Though no sign of the sloth was found, they covered mountain territory previously untrodden by any westerner, and these published findings served as part inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World.
