Clifford H. Plopper (1885-1965) was a Protestant missionary who came to China in the 1920s. The present collection of over two-thousand four hundred Chinese proverbs is grouped under twelve overlapping subjects, incl. 'Ancient Nature Worship', 'Heaven', 'Animism', 'Magic', 'Buddhahood', 'Rewards and Punishments', and 'Life Beyond the Grave' etc. Each proverb is printed in Chinese with a translation as well as a commentary. An extraordinary work of scholarship. The first edition was printed in 1926.
