Married to an English army chaplain, Nina Mazuchelli set out from her home in Darjeeling accompanied by the local District Officer to explore the Eastern glaciers of the Himalayas. Although provisioned with every conceivable comfort from bedsteads to a dinner service, they were not prepared for the rigorous conditions and were forced to abandon their expedition. The author was carried throughout by bearers, as can be seen from the illustration on the upper board, rather akin to Annie Hoare who travelled to Lake Tanganika by bath chair, or May French-Sheldon who nearly died when her palanquin was dropped down a ravine.
