The author travelled from the tip of India as far North as Madras on the East coast and whilst on the West coast was invited by Governor Elphinstone to stay at Government House at Bombay, from where he trod the well worn path to the caves of Elephanta. The main purpose of his tour, however, was to seek out and investigate for himself the efficacy of the Christian missions in this part of the world.
