Giles (1845-1935) joined the Consular service and was posted to Peking in 1867. After spending some twenty-five years in various positions in China he returned to England where he was given a professorship for Chinese at Cambridge in 1897. The present is a collection of over 2500 biographical entries, much enlarged from the 800 previously listed in Mayers' work. Giles states in the introduction that his aim was to assist the British Consular Service to make sense of the frequent literary allusions used by Chinese politicians and scholars. An excellent reference work.
