Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720), engraver, mapmaker and publisher, was appointed Geographer to King Louis XIV of France; he succeeded his father, Antoine de Fer. He was a prolific mapmaker; one of his most long-lived publications was the Introduction a la Geographie ..., first published in 1708 and re-issued in 1717, [ca. 1723] and, here, in 1754, with the title-page and maps so-dated.

The first edition contained only the map set in the title-page; the second and third added the "La Sphere Artificielle", the map of the world and four continents from the Atlas Curieux. This edition is much expanded, containing the "Sphere Artificielle" and seventeen maps from de Fer’s stock.
