A classic nineteenth-century American voyage, and an important source on California before the 1849 gold rush.

"His book has become a classic account of the life and adventures of an ordinary seaman in the American merchant service, and of the New England shipping trade with Mexican California" (Hill). Engaged in the tallow trade, Dana saw San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Monterey. While this work appears in Forbes, Dana didn't actually travel to Hawaii. Forbes himself notes that at San Diego he met a number of "native Hawaiian expatriates ... whom he discusses sympathetically. Their spokesman ... was 'Manini,' a man 'well known all over California,' while others were named 'Mr Bingham,' after the more famous missionary.'"
