Finely engraved and detailed map of Persia, the Caspian Sea and the western part of Afghanistan.
John Cary sr. (1755-1835) was a noted London engraver, mapmaker and publisher, described by his biographer Sir Herbert Fordham as "The most prominent and successful exponent [of engraving] of his time ... the founder of what we may call the modern English school.", responsible for engraving about 600 maps and perhaps a thousand plates.
This map of Persia was engraved in 1801 for Cary's new Universal Atlas containing distinct maps of all the principal states and kingdoms throughout the world..., first published in 1808. This world atlas was one of the most ambitious of his atlas projects, prepared on a large folio format.
