These two works are extracted from Barcia's Historiadores primitivos de las Indias Occidentales... (1736-49).Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca spent the better part of twelve years exploring North America and Mexico on his first expedition - to conquer Florida - under Panfilo de Narvaez. The party left Spain in 1527, though was shipwrecked off the coast of Texas and the eighty survivors lived with the Karankawa Indians for a year. The fifteen who survived that first year split up and moved to other tribes further north. Cabeza de Vaca found himself with the Avavare and accompanied them on their annual pilgrimages to southern Texas for prickly pear apples. In 1534 Cabeza de Vaca and three others travelled to Mexico via present day El Paso and on to Mexico City. This group acted as medicine men to the tribes they lived with and Cabeza de Vaca was regarded as a powerful shaman. Sabin, 3350; Howes, 131; Palau, 15803; Howgego, C3.
