£225.00  [First Edition]

First Edition. 8vo. Original boards with chromolitho pictorial cover image pasted on, printed titles to spine. Spine expertly restored with the loss of a few characters. Pictorial endpapers, contemporary ink ownership and gift inscriptions to ffep. 64pp. London, Edinburgh Press,

This copy with a loosely inserted ALS to Sir Peter Scott, from a Mrs. J.M. Hammond explaining that the inscriptions were from her mother and aunt, and offering this book as a gift. There is an accompanying photocopy of the reply from Sir Peter Scott's secretary, Mrs Kay Cheeseman, dated 1984. "Sir Peter is away at the moment, but before he left he asked me to [...] pass on to you his most grateful thanks for your kindness in sending him the copy of 'Like English Gentlemen'. He is very pleased to accept it and it will make a very useful addition to his library of books about his father Captain Scott."

A hastily produced publication with Rosove recording a copy inscribed within a month of the news of Scott's tragic death arriving in the UK. The juvenile tale within sees Kathleen Scott explaining the death of Sir Robert Falcon Scott to their infant son through comparison with the story of Peter Pan. This is an interesting point of reference, as Kathleen would later go on to become close friends with the J. M. Barrie and his wife, eventually purchasing their Bayswater home. A highly sentimental work, it gives a sense of the depth of feeling expressed by the British public when faced with this national loss. The dedication: "To Peter's Mother This little wreath for the snow grave of Her Hero." The final page solicits donations to the Daily Chronicle fund set up to support Scott's dependants.
