INSCRIBED BY THE ANONYMOUS AUTHOR

First edition. 2 vols. 8vo. Original printed pale wrappers, spotted, a little soiled, interior clean & bright. iv, 280; iv, 281-536pp. Washington, United States Government Printing Office,

A wonderful presentation copy, inscribed on the title-page: "To M.J. Buerger from the anonymous author of this manual, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, September 4th, 1941." Martin Julian Buerger was an American crystallographer based at MIT who served as geologist on D.B. MacMillan's 1937 Arctic expedition.

Published by the Air Corps, rather than the War Department, it commences with a historical overview before devoting chapters to geography, climate, light, animal life, vegetation, preparing food and drink, clothing and equipment, hunting, and transport.

Macmillan published a trade edition in 1944, which is slightly expanded and names Stefansson as the author.
