First edition. 8vo. vii, [5], 298, [2] pp. Original brown pebble grain cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers panelled in blind, top and fore edges untrimmed, black coated endpapers (some occasional foxing, extremities lightly rubbed, otherwise a very good copy indeed). London, Macmillan and Co.

A collection of essays representing Thornton's (1813-1880) principal philosophical work, in which he criticised the ethical and teleological views of Hume, Huxley and the utilitarians. A close friend and colleague of John Stuart Mill, Thornton is best known for his work On Labour (1869), the arguments of which were instrumental in changing Mill's views.
