A collection of essays representing Thornton's (1813-1880) principal philosophical work, in which he criticised the ethical and teleological views of Hume, Huxley and the utilitarians. A close friend and colleague of John Stuart Mill, Thornton is best known for his work On Labour (1869), the arguments of which were instrumental in changing Mill's views.
