Tarski's famous axiomatic study of algebras satisfying certain properties which capture the arithmetic of cardinal numbers. While this work has its origin in general set theory and, more specifically, in the arithmetic of cardinal numbers, the results of the book however have interest not only from the point of view of abstract set theory, but in the Philosophy of Science; in particular around the theory of measurement and its relevance to testability and an exact science.

Alfred Tarski was one of the leading philosophers of logic and mathematics of the twentieth century, who together with Kurt Gödel, 'changed the face of logic in the twentieth century, especially through his work on the concept of truth and the theory of models' (Feferman).
