A collection of critical essays written between 1962 to 1965 variously responding to the concept of interpretation as an academic practice and its philosophical dangers. Sontag emphasises the importance of the 'surface' (form/style) of creative works. In her writings, the works of Satre, Camus, Simone Weil, Beckett, Levi-Strauss, and Goddard are discussed in relation to ideas such as the connection between films and novels, and theatrical 'Happenings' experiments.
