First edition in English. 8vo. [4], 207, [1] pp. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in red, dust jacket (jacket price clipped, spine panel very faintly toned, otherwise a near fine copy). New York, Oxford University Press.

The first English translation of Schumpeter's third work, which formed the kernel of his great History of Economic Analysis, written much later and first published posthumously in 1954. Schumpeter is probably best known as a historian of economic thought, and the present work is the earliest expression of this historical interest.

"This classic little book is divided into four sections: the first chapter gives a broad survey of economic thought from the days of Aristotle to the beginnings of modern times, the second chapter traces the development of the conception of the circular flow of economic forces, the third deals with the main theorems of the classical economists, and the fourth chapter describes the genesis of the school of marginal utility" (publisher's blurb).
