A commanding study of the history of the Bank of England during the first half of the twentieth century by the renowned British economist and monetary historian Richard Sidney Sayers (1908-1989), best-known for his contributions to the history of banking. The book was a spiritual sequel to Sir John Clapham's celebrated two-volume history on the Bank of England (1944) and was described by the Cambridge economist D.E. Moggridge as 'a massive achievement and the most important addition to the literature of British monetary history in decades' (The Economic Journal).
