First edition. 8vo. Original light blue paper covered boards, spine and front cover lettered in red, dust jacket (faint foxing to endpapers, some trivial wear to extremities of jacket, faint residue from old sticker to front panel, otherwise a vey good copy). London, Freedom Press.

An interesting work by the anarchist poet, literary critic and art historian Herbert Read (183-1968) highlighting the apparent tension in the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre between the existentialist 'radical conception of freedom' and the extreme manifestation of state-controlled power in Sartre's political commitment to communism. The thrust of Read's argument is epitomised by the books subtitle 'chains of freedom'.

The book was printed by the hugely prolific and influential anarchist publishers the Freedom Press, for whom Read would write various pamphlets and introductory works on anarchist philosophy.
