Available to view at our Curzon Street shop.

First edition. 8vo. x, 276 pp. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket (faint partial toning to endpapers, some minor spotting to fore edge, otherwise an excellent copy). London, Macmillan and Co., Limited.

A presentation copy, inscribed by the author 'To Miss Clarke-Jervoise "my most kindly nurse" from the author, Freddie Ayer. Esher September to November 1940.'

The inscription dates from the early stages of Ayer's Second World War military service, while stationed at Sandown Park, Esher, his first posting after graduating from Sandhurst, where he was based for five months from September 25th, 1940. The identity of Miss Clarke-Jervoise remains obscure, however, Ayer was prone to presenting copies of The Foundations of Empirical Knowledge to various women of his life, having the publisher send copies to "lucky" girlfriends well into the 1950s (see Rogers, A.J. Ayer: A Life, p. 244 & 246).

Ayer's second book, "a considerably more sophisticated, closely argued and independently minded work than Language, Truth and Logic, and repudiates some of its main claims" (Rogers, p. 155).
