A substantial treatise on financial management by James O. McKinsey (1889-1937), founder of the legendary consultancy firm McKinsey & Company.

McKinsey & Company was founded in 1926 by James O. McKinsey, then professor of accountancy at the University of Chicago. 'The mid-twentieth-century firm, though, was largely the creation of Marvin Bower, a corporate lawyer from Cleveland who joined it in 1933, at age thirty-one. After James McKinsey died in 1937, the original entity split up. One-half was to become A.T. Kearney, a consulting firm specializing in operations management for manufacturers. Bower assumed leadership of the other half, which had been the New York office, and kept the McKinsey name. McKinsey can nevertheless claim a remarkable number of firsts: It was the first consulting firm to realistically apply scientific approaches to management, solving business problems with a method of hypothesis, data, and proof. It was the first to gamble on youth over experience, and the first to take on the challenge of becoming truly global' (McDonald, The Firm: The Story of McKinsey and Its Secret Influence on American Business, p. 4).

The text was originally published in 1922 under the title Financial Management: An Outline of its Principals and Problems, and was substantially revised for the present second edition with the assistance of Willard J. Graham, a colleague of McKinsey's at the University of Chicago.
