Contemporary polished calf, spines with elaborate gilt lattice work, lettered in gilt on red morocco labels, covers with simple borders, marbled endpapers, marbled edges (faint spotting to endpapers, gilt work to spine somewhat dulled, light wear to extremities, some scuffing to covers, notwithstanding a handsome set). A posthumous collection of previously unpublished works and letters by the great French political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville. The selection includes a substantial biographical note on Tocqueville by the editor Gustave de Beaumont, who accompanied Tocqueville on his famous trip to America in 1831 upon which Tocqueville's seminal work Democracy in America was based.
