Prepared in The Intelligence Branch of The Quartermaster-General's Department, Horse Guards, War Office. [Second Impression]. Seven folding maps in rear pocket, including the unlisted map of the Lines of Communication not issued with the first impression of 1881, ten other maps and plans, eight of them folding, one folding table. Some browning, particularly to the titlepage, some browning on the folds of the maps, but overall very good indeed in the original red embosseed cloth, spine typically sunned and a little chipped, a few minor marks, inner hinges slightly cracked as usual. 174pp. HMSO,

SABIB II, p.429. Uncommon. Print run of 1,500 copies, the initial issue of 2,000 copies of 1881 apparently having been suppressed.

"Most military accounts of the campaign rest squarely on the official Narrative... . A reasonably objective summary, it skirts controversial material but is neither complete nor free from error." [Morris The Washing of the Spears. p.619] Credited to Rothwell, a Professor at the Staff College, by Jay Luvaas in his essay in Higham Official Histories... [p.497].
