Campagne du Général Buonaparte en Italie;

POMMEREUIL François-René-Jean, Baron de (1797.)

£275.00

Pendant les Années IVe. et Ve. de la République Française; par un Officier Général. Some slight browning and staining throughout, title page remounted on a stub, one gathering a little sprung, but on the whole a very good copy in slightly later vellum-backed marbled boards. [iv], 372pp. A Paris, et Chez les Principaux Libraires d'Italie, l'An VI,

Pommereul entered service in the artillery in 1765 and was employed in the expedition to Corsica. In 1787 he was sent to to put the Royal Artillery on the same footing as that of France, but returned when the Kingdom of Naples joined the coalition against France. Asked by Napoleon to command his artillery in Italy Pommereul at first refused, but later agreed, being named a Général de Division in October 1796 and joining the Central Committee of the Artillery. An English translation of this work, by T.E. Ritchie, was published in 1799. This edition apparently a piracy issued without the map included in the Plassan and Bernard edition of the same year.
