The annual manoeuvres of foreign powers were always of interest as news events. At this time they would have had particular significance as, despite the close links between the English and German Royal Houses, the Germans, whilst neutral in the Boer War, were tending to side with the Boers.

An extremely attractive image of soldiers at rest under a clump of trees, rifles stacked and drums laid aside they take afew minutes of respite in the shade.

A well-trained artist Paget is best known for his illustrative work but also rpoduced work on historical and mythological themes, a portrait of W.B. Yeats by Paget is at the Ulster Museum.
