Blayney was captured during the first engagement of the Fuengirola expedition, the Spanish contingent having run away. His captivity put him in a privileged position to observe the French situation in the Peninsula and his keen powers of observation make his account of his journey fascinating from the point of view of the conditions of life in occupied Spain. His imprisonment at Verdun, Bitche and Gueret permanently damaged his health and he saw no further military service.
