"The principles of the art of strategy must be understood before commencing the study of Military History. War is the decisive factor in international policy. It is only through a more or less veiled threat that foreign negociations [sic.] can be conducted." From this basis the paper develops a discussion of the techniques for the fruitful study of Military History with particular reference to the American Civil War.

Beynon served on the North West Frontier 1897-9, Tirah, capture of Sampagha and Arhanga Passes, and the Great War.
