First edition. 8vo., original green cloth, boards undecorated. London, Paris, Melbourne: Cassell & Company, Limited,

Very dark green cloth over beveled boards, boards and foot of spine blank. We don't know the relative priority of copies in this binding compared with the more elaborate lettered binding, but note the ads at rear are dated October 1886, and that Beckson et al cite publication in November 86. A fine copy of Symons' first book, an approach to the sometimes profoundly obscure Browning, who was delighted with it: "How can I manage to thank - much more praise - what, it is generosity and appreciation, makes the poorest recognition 'come too near the praising of myself'? It does indeed strike me as wonderful that you should have given such patient atention to all these poems, and (if I dare say farther) so thoroughly entered into - at any rate - the spirit in which they were written, and the purpose they helped to serve."
