£3000.00

A New Edition, To Which is Prefixed, An Account of the Life of the Author, And a View of His Doctrine Compared with that of the French Economists.

Three volumes. 8vo. xliii, [1], 499, [1]; viii, 523, [1]; vii, [1], 515, [1] pp. With the half titles to Volumes II & III. Nineteenth half brown morocco with marbled paper covered boards, spine with four raised bands outlined in gilt and blind, second and fourth panels lettered in gilt, marbled edges (engraved armorial bookplates of Thomas Lloyd of Minard to front pastedowns of each volume, some faint spotting to endpapers, notwithstanding a very fine set). London, Cadell and Davies ... [et al.]

A handsome copy of this early edition of Smith's masterpiece, 'the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought' (PMM). Originally published in 1776, 'The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry' (ODNB).

This edition was bound up from the additional sheets printed with the 1812 edition of Smith's collected works. It includes the Sketch of the Life of Dr. Adam Smith by Dugald Stewart and Garnier's Comparative view of his doctrine with those of the French economists.
