SAINSBURY Hester (1928.)
£175.00 [First Edition]
Available to view at our Curzon Street shop.
Written in 1824 by Lord Holland. Adorned with Engravings on Wood by Hester Sainsbury. First edition thus, one of 300 numbered copies. Small folio, original patterned boards, printed label on spine. London, Etchells and MacDonald.
An excellent copy, the spine just very slightly darkened. A delightful and eccentric publication, with an arch primitiveness to the hand coloured woodcuts that illustrate this proto-houlipo text, whose subtitle reads "Written in 1824. On reading five Spanish Novels, each omitting throughout one vowel in the alphabet, and a sixth containing one vowel only". Sainsbury, poet and artist from the west country Tuke family, married the book's designer and printer Frederick Etchells four years later.
"Much trouble it cost to pen stories like these -
Quoth a punster, "How so? they are written with Ees."
