A diverse collection of fifteen essays, chiefly politically themed, the majority of which appeared here for the first time, weaving between 'The Ancestry of Fascism' and 'The Case for Socialism' on the one hand and 'Useless Knowledge' and 'What is the Soul?' on the other. The title essay is a notably early presentation of the argument in favour of reduced workings hours, highlighting the obsolescence of the belief that work and labour are virtuous, organising principles of society.
