First edition. Small 8vo., original blue cloth, dust jacket. London, Cresset Press.

A near fine copy in dust jacket, very slightly rubbed at the extremities. The author's first novel, began when she was 19, and published four years later, a tragic masterpiece set in the Deep South in the depression era, described by the author as 'a three part fugue', a meditation on isolation and loneliness, notable for its sympathetic portrayal of its black characters, an extraordinary achievement for a shy and lonely young woman from a small town in Georgia. It was adapted for the screen by Robert Ellis Miller, starring Alan Arkin and Sondra Locke, although the setting was moved to the 1960s.
