First edition. 8vo. Original blue cloth, with dust jacket. London, William Heinemann.
The half-title is inscribed and signed by Maugham, "For Fred / This is the first issue of this novel with won for won't on p.147 / W. Somerset Maugham". Frederick Bason was Maugham's close friend and his first bibliographer, providing a nice association between Maugham and a young man who was, for some years, one of his closest acquaintances. This copy lacks the "t" of "won't" on line 14 of p.147, which is often regarded as the 'first state', (even by Maugham himself); however, as Toole Stott points out this may well be merely a matter of type slippage during the print run (the "t" could have dropped off during the run, or it could have been inserted during the run - in either event, both 'states' were issued simultaneously to the public). This volume is in fine condition; the dust jacket is very good ( one long front cover tear and minor edgewear, with conservation tissue applied to the back-side).
