MacLean's first novel. During the Second World War Maclean served in the Royal Navy on the HMS Royalist as leading torpedo operator, almost ten years later after winning a short-story competition run by the Glasgow Herald he came to the attention of Ian Chapman, who worked at the Collins publishing house. Chapman persuaded him to write HMS Ulysses, which was published in October 1955 and was an instant bestseller.
A very good copy, rubber bookseller stamp to front free endpaper, and minor offsetting, slight rubbing to extremities, some spotting to reverse of dust jacket. (ODNB)
