Revolt in the Desert.
LAWRENCE T.E. (1927.)
With various illustrations. First trade edition. 8vo., original brown cloth. Top edge stained, fore and lower edges uncut. London, Jonathan Cape.
A de facto inscribed copy, with a brief undated ALS on the letterhead of the Grand Hotel Lyndhurst. "Dear L-H. There is not and will not be a signed "Revolt". I heard once that the rarest book in London was a 1st edition of Abraham Lincoln not signed by the author: and as there were 7000 "firsts" of Revolt the prospect was too awful. Anyway I'm sure it was a good rule. Only seldom (as now) do I regret it. T. E. Shaw." As is well known, Lawrence refused both to accept royalties from Revolt in the Desert beyond what was needed to pay back the debt incurred in printing the Subscribers Edition of Seven Pillars, but he also made a big point of not inscribing copies of this later version, conscious maybe of not devaluing subscribers' investment in their edition. He would appear to have stuck by this maxim, and the present copy is as close as one is likely to get. Binding slightly used, but a very good copy, with the bookplate of Basil Liddell Hart.
