A rare very early letter with interesting enclosures, written while an undergraduate at Jesus College, Oxford, addressed to Mrs. Lane Poole, the wife of his tutor, Reginald Lane Poole: “The enclosed are all that I can find, of glass-portraits in the College. I should think they date from about 1440–1450. When they were in the old library they must have looked very beautiful. Of course the faces are quite conventional.” The list of stained glass portraits is made with Lawrence’s characteristic care: his enthusiasm for brass rubbing and churches is well known.
Manuscript material from before the war is virtually unobtainable.
