With warm personal regard, and with grateful acknowledgment of a deeply valued association in these years of war WL Mackenzie King. Kingsmere, September 24th 1941'. Athlone's Consulship coincided with the Second World War, and he felt he could make himself most useful in supporting the war effort. He attended the Quebec Conferences in Quebec in 1943, in which King, Churchill and FDR planned the Allied war effort.
