First edition. 8vo., original red cloth. London, MacMillan.

Inscribed by the author to a prominent participant in the intense scientific and moral wranglings of the mid nineteenth century. "John Evans, esq., from his friend, T.H. Huxley". Evans was treasurer of The Royal Society while Huxley was the President.

When Owen bought the sensational fossil Archaeopteryx in 1862 ("the exorbitant £400 price tag only increased its notoriety" (Desmond)) it was Evans who detected a toothed jaw and then the brain case. He declared that the fossil's bearing on the Origin of Species "must be evident to all". Slightly browned on the spine, otherwise an excellent copy.
